Job Description Position SummaryThe inside machinist operate in
3 sections: Machining, Valves and Pumps. Responsibilities and
functional knowledge varies based on the designated section.All
inside machinists are encouraged, but not required, to gain
experience in any section other than their designated section.Key
Responsibilities & Functional KnowledgeThis list is representative
of the key areas of responsibility and functional knowledge
required of a first class mechanic in the Inside Machine shop. A
first class mechanic must demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the
skills, functional knowledge and abilities required to perform
tasks in these and related areas of responsibility. Advanced
knowledge means that the mechanic understands how to perform tasks
in these categories (including, but not limited to, the specific
tasks identified below) and is able to complete them independently
and teach others how to complete the tasks. This also means that
the mechanic has the necessary level of knowledge of the equipment,
protective gear, and machinery required to complete these tasks. A
first class mechanic also is expected to strategize independently
and problem-solve as appropriate. Machinists Assigned to the
Machining Section
- Operate Machinery - Must know how to operate the following
machines safely, and be developing additional skills in the
following key areas:
- Lathes
- Able to hold tighter tolerances
- Thread internally and externally
- Operate and performance maintenance on the following types of
lathes:
- Lathe to 24"
- Lathe over 24"
- Vertical Turrent Lathe
- Perform basic maintenance on the lathes
- Milling machines
- Able to hold tighter tolerances
- Complete in-line valve repairs
- Perform basic maintenance on the vertical milling machine
- Operate vertical mills
- Trained on the uses of the Horizontal boring mill based on
department need (preferred, but not required)
- Drill presses
- Operate the drill press
- Assess the drill presses for basic repairs
- Perform repairs to the drill presses
- Grinders
- Trained on operating and providing maintenance to surface or
gate grinders based on department need (preferred, but not
required)
- Flange Facer
- Operate face flanges on valves and other parts
- Operate Overhead Crane
- Able to accomplish rigging of equipment and materials
- Be able to obtain a crane operators license
- Machining Tools
- Operate band saw
- Operate a micrometer
- Use precision measuring tools
- Other
- Manufacture parts
- Maintain and repair machinery
- Repair ship components using more complex blueprints, sketches
and sample parts
- Disassemble, clean, inspect and repair various ships
components
- Assist with in-place machine operations when needed to include:
machining, drilling, milling, facing and boring
- Complete more complex drawings and sketches for use in
manufacturing parts mechanical ability
- Produce machine work at an efficient rate with minimal or no
defects that are out of tolerance
- Plan and accomplish tasks in an efficient manner
- Operate Machinery - Must know how to operate the following
machines safely, and be developing additional skills in the
following key areas:
- Lathes
- Able to hold tighter tolerances
- Operate the lathe to 24" to manufacture lathes, machine laps,
seats and gates
- Know the basic operations of the Vertical Turrent Lathe to
manufacture lathes, machine laps, seats, and gates
- Assess and provide basic maintenance for lathes
- Trained in operating and performing maintenance on the Lathe
over 24" (preferred, but not required)
- Milling machines
- Hold tighter tolerances
- Accomplish basic in-line valve repairs
- Know operations of the vertical mill
- Assess and provide maintenance for the mill
- Trained on the basic uses of the vertical mill based on
department need (preferred, but not required)
- Drill presses
- Operate the drill press
- Assess the drill presses for repairs
- Make repairs to the drill presses
- Grinders
- Gate grinder
- Operate the gate grinder
- Know uses of the gate grinder to include grinding gates for
valves and fit of the gate for a valve body
- Provide maintenance and repair for the grinder
- Trained on operating and providing maintenance to the surface
grinders based on department need (preferred, but not
required)
- Flange Facer
- Work with face flanges on valves and other parts in the shop
and on the ship
- Valve Assembly, Disassembly, Inspection and Repair
- Perform valve repair procedure
- Perform work with stencil and mark
- Assemble valves by following sketches, manuals and/or technical
documents
- Disassemble valves
- Clean the valve parts without damaging
- Inspect and repair valves
- Record findings on a valve sheet before submitting to a
supervisor
- Valve Hydro
- Test the valve hydro
- Be present during the check point with supervisor in
attendance
- Valve in line repair
- Perform valve in line repair on the ship (preferred, but not
required)
- Understand inline repairs
- Perform basic machining safely
- Valve Troubleshoot
- Perform valve repairs and troubleshooting
- Machining Tools
- Operate a band saw
- Operate a micrometer
- Use precision measuring tools
- Machinists Assigned to the Pump Section - (*Specialty section
assigned based on shop need and employee skill and ability*)
- Know pump operations
- Know the mechanics of pump parts
- Disassemble pumps
- Clean pumps, without damaging
- Inspect, troubleshoot and repair pumps
- Reassemble pumps
- Test a pump Hydro and conduct final inspectionRequired
Education, Experience, & Skills Education Minimum: High School
Diploma/GEDMinimum Relevant Experience: 2 to 4 yrsPractical Theory
Requirements
- An Inside Machinist mechanic must demonstrate an advanced
understanding of lathe operation, drill press operations, milling
machine operations, blueprint reading and layout of projects to be
machined.
- Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple
instructions
- Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out
instructions in written, oral or diagram form
- Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure,
including fractions and decimals
- Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure
- Must be able to wear applicable PPE (Hard hat, safety goggles,
gloves, steel toes shoes, ear protection, respirator when
necessary)
- Must be able to obtain a government access badgePreferred
