Job Description:

DescriptionClark Nexsen is a signatory to the AIA 2030, MEP 2040, and SE 2050 Commitments in the pursuit of net zero carbon buildings. The sustainability department directly supports design teams in pursuit of these commitments, in addition to informing the design of equitable, resilient, and healthy built environments. As a student member of this department, you will support sustainable design efforts in Summer 2025 through a combination of direct project work and research.
General responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:


  • Analysis of building sustainability strategies, including topics such as: site and habitat design, energy and water analysis, passive solar studies, healthy indoor environments, and materials selection
  • Preparing documentation in support of third-party sustainability certifications (LEED, Green Globes, WELL, state and federal criteria, etc.)
  • Researching emerging technologies and design trends related to sustainability & high performance buildings
  • Preparing marketing and presentation materials
  • Participating in design team meetings and coordinating efforts with other team members
  • Working with, responding to, and taking direction from team leaders, architects, engineers, and project managers

    Education, Technology, and Experience

    • Currently enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited program with at least two complete years of study in one of the following programs:

      • Architecture
      • Architectural Engineering
      • Mechanical Engineering
      • Interior Design
      • Other programs directly related to sustainability in the built environment


      • Applicant should be able to effectively utilize basic Microsoft Office programs such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint
      • Familiarity with any of the following software is highly desirable:

        • Revit
        • Rhino/Grasshopper
        • Building energy analysis tools such as Sefaira, ClimateStudio, eQuest, Energy Plus, IES VE, or Trace 3DPlus
        • Daylight simulation tools such as ClimateStudio, Sefaira, or DiVA for Rhino
        • Embodied carbon calculators such as EC3 and Tally


        • One previous architectural or engineering internship or similar relevant work experience is preferred.

          Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

          • Familiarity with current topics in building sustainability is preferred
          • Ability to arrange housing for the period of employment
          • Ability to prepare effective and concise documents
          • Possess technical precision and creative design skills
          • Ability to make presentations to a variety of groups
          • Ability to work well with others in a team environment

            Physical Requirements
            Work is sedentary and often performed in an office setting. Work area is lighted, heated, and ventilated. This position may require extended periods of standing, sitting, as well as some repetitive movements, bending and lifting of minimal weight.             Workplace Flexibility
            We have selected two as common days in the office to nurture collaboration and innovation and to support learning and growth through engagement with colleagues. We are asking everyone to be present on Mondays and Thursdays, with a required third day that will provide additional flexibility and be set between you and your supervisor (with consideration given to your project team members and clients).
