Job Description Position SummaryThe Carpenter Shop First Class
Mechanic performs a variety of skilled mechanical duties involving
working with equipment, working with Nomex panel, installation of
various materials and drydock block and crate building. The First
Class Mechanic operates equipment for assembly and installation;
and follows specified safety policies and procedures.Key
Responsibilities & Functional KnowledgeThis list is representative
of the key areas of responsibility and functional knowledge
required of a second class mechanic in the Carpenter shop. A first
class mechanic must demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the
skills, functional knowledge and abilities required to perform
tasks in these and related areas of responsibility. Advanced
knowledge means that the mechanic understands how to perform tasks
in these categories (including, but not limited to, the specific
tasks identified below) and is able to complete them independently
and teach others how to complete the tasks. This also means that
the mechanic has the necessary level of knowledge of the equipment,
protective gear, and machinery required to complete these tasks. A
first class mechanic also is expected to strategize independently
and problem-solve as appropriate. Equipment
- Mobile Equipment
- Use a hand saw (must have a hand saw as a part of personal tool
set)
- Trained on using grinders
- Fixed equipment (must be trained on and operate the following
equipment)
- Table saw
- Planer
- Drill presses (Material: Wood or Metal Frames)
- Nomex Panels Plates
- Perform the counter sinking process as it relates to synthetic
deck plates
- Removals and Interference
- Batterboards
- Unbolt boards
- Draw Sketches
- Label with material identification tags
- Deck
- Conduct inspections and observing how to document
imperfections
- Handle the following materials - Electrical grade matting,
Terrazo, PRC, Vinyl, etc.
- False Overhead
- Draw sketches
- Label and tag all gridding and panels
- Remove the panels and grids
- Tiles
- Remove Ceramic/Terracotta and Sound Dampening Tile
- Handle Ceramic/Terracotta and Sound Dampening Tile
- Installations
- Fiber glass on the shafts
- Install basic polysulfide coating on the end of the shaft
- Install the resin
- Wrap the shaft and make adjustments as needed
- Wood Decking
- Cut the wood
- Shoot studs
- Measure planks
- Secure with metal fasteners
- Caulk
- Batterboards
- Electrical Grade Matting
- Glue, seal, measure and lay matting
- Inspect for imperfections
- Deck Coating System (Terrazo, PRC, vinyl, tile, etc.)
- Glue, seal, measure and lay tiles
- Tiles
- Install and handle Ceramic/Terracotta and Sound Dampening
Tile
- False Overhead
- Lay out and install all types of false overhead panels
- Draw where the grid goes and each tile goes; draw current state
of the space
- Read blueprints to install overheads
- Building Crates, Hatches & Steps
- Crate
- Read specs for measurements and weight
- Assess the equipment being crated and build crate
- Hatches
- Read specs for measurements and build hatches
- Steps
- Measure
- Layout and fabricate a set of steps
- Drydock Block Building
- Read advanced blueprints for measurements
- Cut and assemble blocks
- Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) Handrails
- Read advanced blueprints for measurements
- Layout, fabricate and install handrails
- Optional:PCMS Tile - removal and installationRequired
Education, Experience, & Skills Minimum Education: High School
Diploma/GEDMinimum Relevant Experience: 4 to 7 yrs.Must be able to
obtain a government access badge.Practical Theory RequirementsA
first class mechanic must demonstrate an advanced understanding of
working with equipment, working with Nomex panel, installation of
various materials and drydock block and crate building.Other
Requirements
- Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple
instructions
- Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out
instructions in written, oral or diagram form
- Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure,
including fractions and decimals
- Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure
- Must be able to wear applicable PPE (Hard hat, safety goggles,
gloves, steel toes shoes, ear protection, chaps if working with
chainsaw, Tyvek suits and respirators when working with certain
chemicals)

Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which will determine your
